David Doobin, MD, PhD is an ophthalmologist, retina specialist & vitreoretinal surgeon at NJRetina. He grew up in northern New Jersey and graduated magna cum laude from Washington and Lee University with a degree in Neuroscience. He then enrolled in the dual degree MD/PhD program at Columbia University, where he received grant support from the NIH while studying the cell biology of neocortical and retinal development. While in graduate school he contributed to some of the earliest studies on the pathogenesis of the emerging Zika virus and microcephaly.
Dr. Doobin stayed at Columbia University to complete his residency in ophthalmology at the Edward S. Harkness Eye Institute, where he served as the chief resident. This was followed by a two-year fellowship in vitreoretinal surgery at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary/Harvard Ophthalmology. He has received numerous academic honors and awards, including the Heed Foundation Fellowship Award while in fellowship at Mass Eye and Ear/Harvard, and the Edith and Denton McKane research award while at Columbia.
Dr. Doobin has published extensively in numerous peer-reviewed journals, including first author publications in Nature Communications, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, and Ophthalmology. Additionally, he is an esteemed speaker at regional, national, and international conferences. He is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology (ABO) and is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Retina Specialists.
Outside of work Dr. Doobin enjoys running/cycling and competing in triathlons, hiking, and painting.
