Dr. Sumit P. Shah joined NJRetina in 2013. Dr. Shah, a native of New Jersey, received his degree in Chemical Biology from the Stevens Institute of Technology, where he graduated Valedictorian.
He earned his MD degree on a full academic scholarship from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, New Jersey Medical School, where he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society for exceptional academic performance. Dr. Shah completed his residency in ophthalmology at UCLA‘s Jules Stein Eye Institute, which consistently ranks among the top five eye institutes nationwide. He completed his two-year medical and surgical retina fellowship at the Tufts New England Eye Center and the Ophthalmic Consultants of Boston, which are among the leading retina research and clinical trials center in the country, respectively.
Dr. Shah has lectured at national meetings of the American Society of Retina Specialists (ASRS), Association for Research and Vision in Ophthalmology and the Retina Society. He has authored numerous scientific articles on a broad array of topics including submacular hemorrhages from age-related macular degeneration, ultrawide-field imaging, advanced intraocular lens implantation techniques, anti-VEGF therapy for wet macular degeneration and diabetic eye disease, endophthalmitis after pars plana vitrectomy, retinal detachment, optical coherence tomography, cystoid macular edema and advances in macular hole surgery. He serves as an oral examiner for the American Board of Ophthalmology, the organization responsible for certifying eye physicians and surgeons in the United States. He has served as a peer reviewer for Retina, the Journal of Retina and Vitreous Diseases and Ophthalmic Surgery Lasers and Imaging . He serves on the Education Committee for the ASRS, from which he has received an Honor Award.
Prior to joining NJRetina, Dr. Shah was in private practice in Connecticut and was Clinical Instructor at the Yale University School of Medicine. Dr. Shah is board-certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. He is a member of the American Society of Retina Specialists and is a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He was elected by his peers to be a member of The Retina Society, a fellow of the American Colleges of Surgeons, and a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha national medical honor society. He is on the medical staff of Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, NJ, and has been appointed Clinical Associate Professor at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, where he serves as volunteer teaching faculty.
Having served as sub-investigator or Principal Investigator in over 40 clinical trials, Dr. Shah has significant experience with emerging therapies for macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease, and retinal vein occlusion. He has substantial experience with complex vitreoretinal surgical cases.
During his free time, Dr. Shah cherishes family time with his wife and two daughters. He enjoys traveling, cooking, and gardening.
