Dimosthenis (Dimos) Mantopoulos M.D., Ph.D is an ophthalmologist, retina specialist & vitreoretinal surgeon at NJRetina. Dr. Mantopoulos received his medical degree as well as his PhD in Ocular Immunology from Athens Medical School (the top medical school in Greece) where he was accepted after getting one of the top scores in the country’s national exam.

Dr. Mantopoulos continued his education in the United States and was accepted into a retina research fellowship at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary/ Harvard Medical School. While there, his work on neuro-protection after retinal detachment and its clinical applications were patented. He continued to complete an internal medicine internship at the Metropolitan Hospital/New York Medical College followed by his ophthalmology residency at Ohio State University. Dr. Mantopoulos was then selected for the Retina Fellowship Program at NJRetina, Rutgers/Robert W. Johnson.

Upon the completion of his fellowship program, Dr. Mantopoulos became an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at Dartmouth, Geisel School of Medicine where, on top of his clinical responsibilities, he continued to publish and mentor ophthalmology residents as well as medical students. Despite moving to New Jersey to practice at NJRetina, Dr. Mantopoulos continues to teach at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth as an Adjunct Assistant Professor. We are very excited to see him back at NJRetina now.

Dr. Mantopoulos has authored more than 40 publications in peer reviewed journals including JAMA Ophthalmology, Retina- The Journal of Retinal and Vitreous Diseases, Ophthalmic Surgery, Lasers and Imaging Retina, Seminars in Ophthalmology, Journal of Neuro-Ophthalmology, Journal of Vitreoretinal Diseases. He has been invited to lecture at numerous academic institutions and international conferences. He has been selected as a moderator of the expert panel at the symposium of the American Society of Retinal Specialists (ASRS) and to organize the retina meeting on behalf of the New England Ophthalmological Society. Dr. Mantopoulos serves as a member of the educational committee of the ASRS. He has been invited to serve as a peer-reviewer for 16 scientific journals, he has presented dozens of scientific abstracts and he has co-authored ophthalmological textbooks.

Dr. Mantopoulos is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology (ABO).
