Dr. Alfaro is an ophthalmologist, retina specialist, and vitreo-retinal surgeon at NJRetina. Born in El Salvador, he spent his childhood years in New Jersey and attended Rutgers University where he graduated Magna Cum Laude with a major in Biological Sciences and a minor in Music. He received his medical degree from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.
Dr. Alfaro completed his residency in Ophthalmology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. He subsequently pursued and completed a two-year fellowship in vitreo-retinal diseases and surgery at the prestigious Kresge Eye Institute in Detroit, Michigan.
Dr. Alfaro has authored many papers in peer reviewed journals including The American Journal of Ophthalmology, Journal of Neuro-Ophthalmology, and Journal of Glaucoma. He has presented at national and regional conferences. He has been involved in various multi-center clinical trials as a sub-investigator including the GUARD trial and OcuTerra DR:EAM trial.
As a member of organizations that help under-represented individuals enter medicine such as the Latino Medical Student Association, Office for Diversity and Academic Success in the Sciences, and Premedical Urban Leaders Summer Enrichment Program, he has had the opportunity to guide pre-medical students embark on their medical journey.
Dr. Alfaro is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
In his spare time, Dr. Alfaro enjoys running, surfing, and working on 3D artwork. Dr. Alfaro is fluent in both English and Spanish.
