Howard F. Fine, MD
Dr. Howard F. Fine joined NJRetina in 2009. Dr. Fine received his dual undergraduate degrees in chemical engineering and biology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, a masters degree in clinical trials from Duke University, and his medical degree with honors from Harvard Medical School. He completed his ophthalmology residency at the Johns Hopkins Wilmer Eye Institute, a uveitis research fellowship at the National Eye Institute, and his two-year medical and surgical retina fellowship at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York.
Dr. Fine sits on the editorial board of the journal Retina, as well as on the editorial board of Ophthalmic Surgery Lasers & Imaging. He has received several national honors including the Heed Ophthalmic Fellowship Award and the Ronald G. Michels Retina Fellowship Award. Dr. Fine was elected into the Retina Society, and has been selected by his peers for inclusion in Best Doctors in America since 2009.
Dr. Fine served as the Medical Director of the Gerstner Clinical Research Center at Columbia University prior to joining NJRetina. He has published extensively on macular degeneration, vein occlusion, diabetic retinopathy, and retinal surgery, with over 70 publications in the peer-reviewed literature, 8 book chapters, and over 200 abstracts. He has been invited to lecture and perform surgery internationally, including France, Dubai, and India. Dr. Fine has been a principal investigator in numerous national clinical trials and serves on the staff of Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, NJ, and Kimball Medical Center in Lakewood, NJ.
Dr. Fine holds several patents for retinal surgical devices and co-founded a retinal surgical robotics company, where he now serves as the head of its scientific advisory board. Dr. Fine is married with a son and a daughter and is an avid tennis player.
