Neal S. Patel, M.D. is a retina specialist and vitreoretinal surgeon at NJRetina. He earned his undergraduate and medical degrees through the highly competitive B.S./M.D. Premedical-Medical Program at Pennsylvania State University and Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University, graduating summa cum laude from both institutions. In medical school, he earned induction into the Alpha Omega Alpha and Gold Humanism Honor Societies as well as recognition with the Carol R. Mullen Memorial Prize in Ophthalmology from Wills Eye Hospital.
Dr. Patel completed his residency at Harvard Medical School / Massachusetts Eye and Ear. He was selected as Chief Resident, where he served as an Instructor at Harvard Medical School and Director of the Ocular Trauma Service at Massachusetts Eye and Ear, one of the busiest eye trauma centers in the country. He then completed his vitreoretinal surgery fellowship at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai.
Dr. Patel has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications in academic journals including Journal of Ophthalmology, Journal of Glaucoma, and Ophthalmic Surgery, Laser and Imaging Retina with research spanning topics such as ocular trauma, retinal imaging, and infectious and inflammatory retinal diseases. He has presented his work nationally at meetings such as the American Academy of Ophthalmology and Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO).
He is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and a member of the American Society of Retina Specialists, American Academy of Ophthalmology, Vit-Buckle Society, and the American Society of Ophthalmic Trauma.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Patel enjoys tennis, hiking, travel, exploring new cuisines, and spending time with friends and family. He is conversationally fluent in Spanish.
