Ocular Oncology
Although relatively rare, various types of tumors can occur within the eye (intraocular tumors). Examples are choroidal melanoma, retinoblastoma, choroidal nevus and hemangioma. Some of these tumors are malignant and others are benign (they cannot spread to distant parts of the body) but even benign tumors can cause visual loss. Treatments for intraocular tumors include radiation, laser, and surgical removal. Because these tumors occur infrequently, specialized training is necessary, and care is usually provided by an ocular oncologist. Dr. Steven A. Madreperla at Retina Associates of New Jersey is fellowship-trained in ocular oncology. Patients referred for management of their eye tumor are provided with a comprehensive evaluation leading to specific diagnosis. All treatment modalities are available at Retina Associates of New Jersey and after complete discussion with the patient, care is provided either in the office or at Hackensack University Medical Center. Follow-up is provided in one of our outpatient offices and is coordinated with the patient's medical doctors.
