Indocyanine Green (ICG) Angiography

Indocyanine Green (ICG) Angiography is a test used in patients with certain types of age-related macular degeneration to determine whether laser treatment is possible. It is often used following or in conjunction with a fluorescein angiogram. A water soluble dye is injected into a vein in the patient's arm. The dye quickly passes through the circulation to the eye and serial, rapid photographs reveal any leaking blood vessels. This test does not involve any x-rays and is quite safe. Patients with a known iodine or shell fish allergy should report this to the physician prior to ICG testing. These patients will be pre-medicated to eliminate the risk of a severe allergic reaction.
